"HOKEHANKIST"

REMEMBERING THOSE

BEFORE US

It is a venerable tradition in the Armenian Church for families to request special requiem prayers on the 40th day and on subsequent anniversaries of the death of their loved ones.

If the requiem services takes place on a Sunday, following the Divine Liturgy, the priest mentions the names of the deceased during the prayers of the Divine Liturgy.  According to the teachings of the Armenian Church, those who have died enter into a period of rest while awaiting our Lord’s glorious second coming at the end of time.

But while separated from the Christian community, the souls that are at rest continue to be counted among the faithful, who “rest in the shadow of the church.”

We therefore pray for them, as we pray for all of our earthly cares. Essentially, our prayer for the dead is that they rest in peace, that the Lord forgive them all of their sins and find them worthy of eternal life in the Father’s kingdom when Christ comes again.

Praying for the dead is a proclamation of our faith in Christ’s second coming, and our hope in the resurrection of the dead.

When the Armenian Church prays regularly for the dead, we are reminded that this life is transient, and we are filled with hope because we believe that death is too.

THE CHURCH IS HERE TO HELP...

THERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE STEPS WHEN IT COMES TO REQUESTING A "HOKEHANKIST".  THE "HOKEHANKIST" TAKES PLACE TOWARDS THE CONCLUSION OF SUNDAY SERVICES, EVERY SUNDAY, WITH SOME EXCEPTIONS DUE TO HOLIDAYS.

HOWEVER, EVEN THOUGH SOME SUNDAYS ARE EXCLUDED FOR REQUESTING A "HOKEHANKIST", A FAMILY CAN REQUEST A "DER VOGHORMYA" (ANOTHER FORM OF REMEMBRANCE DURING REGULAR SUNDAY SERVICE) THROUGHOUT THE YEAR ON SUNDAYS.

THREE EASY STEPS AND PIECES OF INFORMATION:

1.) YOU CAN CALL THE CHURCH OFFICE DURING THE WEEK, BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 9 A.M. TO 4 P.M., TO REQUEST THE "HOKEHANKIST" VIA PHONE, PRIOR TO YOUR ARRIVAL TO CHURCH ON SUNDAY.

2.) PRE-PLANING IS BENEFICIAL, IN THAT IT GIVES EXTENDED FAMILY AND FRIENDS TIME TO ADD THEIR NAMES TO THE "HOKEHANKIST".

3.) YOU CAN ARRIVE AT CHURCH EARLIER ON SUNDAY AND REQUEST THE "HOKEHANKIST" IN PERSON AT THE CHURCH OFFICE.

ANSWER: NO.  THERE IS NO COST.  THIS IS A PART OF THE CHURCH AND THE SUNDAY SERVICES.  WITH THAT SAID, MANY OF THOSE WHO MAKE THE REQUEST FOR "HOKEHANKIST" MAKE A DONATION IN THE NAME OF THE PERSON THEY A MEMORIALIZING TO THE CHURCH.

QUESTION: WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT TO ADD THEIR NAME TO A "HOKEHANKIST" I HAVE REQUESTED?

ANSWER: IT IS A CUSTOMARY ACTION FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO ADD THEIR NAMES TO YOUR REQUESTED "HOKEHANKIST".  IN FACT, IT IS COMMON CUSTOM TO NOTIFY FAMILY FRIENDS OF "HOKEHANKIST" DATES SEVERAL WEEKS BEFORE.  PEOPLE ADD THEIR NAMES, BECAUSE THEY WANT TO BE A PART OF THE MEMORIALIZING PROCESS AND TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT OF THE FAMILY.
